An 'artefact' that is a thin plate with a specified hole in the middle. It is usually placed in a pipe to measure the rate of fluid flow.

By measuring the difference in fluid pressure between the normal pipe section and at the vena contracta (just after the orifice), we can find the velocity of the fluid flow by applying Bernoulli's equation.
