hasDefinitionA source of alternating current of any frequency, which is sustained in a circuit by a valve or transisstor using positive feedback principle or by a negative resistance device. There are two types: 1) stabletype, in which frequency is determined by a line or a tuned (LC) circuit, waveform being substantially sinusoidal, and 2) relaxation-type, in which frequency is determined by resistors and capacitors, waveform havning considerable content of harmonics. Also applied to mechanical systems, velocities being equivalent to currents.
